Lessons in Logic – Bears

There is a saying that, “A single death is a tragedy, 1 millions deaths a statistic”. In todays day and age we see this fallacious idea propagated endlessly.

If a tidal wave struck a beach and were to:
-Kill 2 people
-Hospitalize several hundred
-Severely disable 20 of those
-Annihilate 5 million dollars worth of property

Any sensible person would label this a tragedy; someone trying to minimize the event, however, could easily say “Only 2 people died, how bad is it really?”. Such a person would invariably be wrong; a logical person grasps the entirety of a situation, not just one misleading element.
